    A device and method of use for the calibration of a detector. The calibration device includes a first source configured to produce first electromagnetic energy EMR. A first diffuser is connected to the first source and is configured to accept the first EMR and provide a first diffused portion of the first EMR. An integrating sphere defines an interior and is optically connected to the first diffuser, and is configured to accept the first diffused portion from the first diffuser into the interior. An exit port connected to the integrating sphere is configured to pass at least a portion of electromagnetic energy. A thermal mechanism is configured to adjust and maintain the temperature of at least the first source. The integrating sphere is configured to pass only a second portion of the first diffused portion of the first EMR from the first diffuser to the exit port. In another embodiment, the calibration device has an arm, an actuator, and a module. The module supports at least a first source that emits electromagnetic energy, a thermal mechanism, and a controller. The actuator is configured to move the arm and module to a calibration position enabling the first source to be within the line of sight of an external detector, while the controller is configured to control the thermal mechanism enabling precise temperature regulation of the source and therefore the regulation of the emitted electromagnetic energy. When the device is not in the calibration position, the actuator is configured to move the arm and module to a stowed position, protecting the device from ambient electromagnetic radiation and harm.

    A nuclear reactor fuel is provided. The nuclear reactor fuel includes a liquid metal alloy, and uranium dioxide (UO2) particles suspended in the liquid metal alloy. The UO2 particles are enriched with uranium-235 (235U) in an amount of less than 20%. The nuclear reactor fuel has a thermal conductivity greater than a thermal conductivity of sintered UO2 pellets at the same temperature. The liquid metal alloy may be a bismuth-lead-tin (Bi—Pb—Sn)-based alloy and a lead-tin (Pb—Sn)-based alloy. A concentration of the UO2 particles in the liquid metal alloy may be up to 30 wt % or more. The UO2 particles alternatively may be uranium carbide (UC) particles, uranium nitride (UN) particles, or tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) particles. A nuclear reactor is also provided. The nuclear reactor includes a reactor vessel and the nuclear reactor fuel. The nuclear reactor fuel is contained in or circulated through the reactor vessel.

    A system suppresses extreme voltage surges induced on electric power lines due to transient electromagnetic energy disturbance from detonation of a nuclear weapon at high altitude generating an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) comprising E1, E2, and E3 pulses, geomagnetic disturbance, and intentional electromagnetic interference. Low voltage (LV) surge protection (SP) assemblies mounted at medium voltage (MV) inputs and LV outputs of the stacked converter cells of a solid-state transformer (SST) form SP of MV and LV electrical power grids interfaced by the SST. The SP assemblies utilize LV components to provide MV grid protection, shunting overcurrent to ground without interfering with the SST MV/LV grid segments isolation. The SP components are selected and coordinated to achieve predefined response at protection threshold voltage levels with current capacity mitigating complex components of HEMP. The hybrid SP communicates with SST control to react to a prolonged overvoltage/overcurrent fault condition.
