The thermal mass can be coupled to a heater that receives electrical energy from a renewable source, and converts the electrical energy into thermal energy to heat the thermal mass and thereby store the thermal energy. In some aspects, a furnace is in fluid communication with the thermal mass such that the furnace receives the working fluid from the thermal mass to provide thermal energy to process for chemical production that would otherwise typically be provided by flue gas from a hydrocarbon-fired radiant section in conventional systems. In some configurations, the working fluid is or comprises one or more radiatively participating gases heated to exceed a threshold above which the working fluid transfers heat through radiation.
